Sermon: Ogo Lori Ite – The Glory Upon the Prayer Mat

Opening Reflection:
In the sacred silence of devotion, there is a place where human humility meets absolute divine majesty. It is the moment the forehead touches the ground. In Yoruba spiritual expression, we speak of Ogo Lori Ite—the radiant, undeniable Glory upon the Mat. This is not a glory of earthly crowns or political thrones; it is the spiritual splendor that descends when a believer surrenders completely to the Creator upon their prayer mat (Ite Adura).

I. The Mat as a Throne of Humility

In the Islamic tradition, the prayer mat (Sajjadah) is a demarcated space of absolute purity. It isolates the believer from the noise, the filth, and the distractions of the world.

  • The Paradox of Elevation: Earthly kings sit up on their thrones (Ite) to display their power. But in the presence of the Almighty, the believer goes down to the mat to find true elevation.
  • The Weight of Splendor: When you unroll your mat and step onto it, you are stepping into a courtroom of raw majesty—Eru ogo re (the awe of His glory). The mat becomes a sanctuary where the Custodian of Glory (Elemi Ogo) looks upon the broken spirit and restores it. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught, “The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is in prostration.” (Sahih Muslim). The lowest point on the mat is the highest peak of spiritual glory.

II. The Clean Slate: Erasing the Past upon the Mat

Every time a believer steps onto the mat, they are seeking a zero-slate initialization—a spiritual rebirth.

  • Washing Away the Burden: The physical washing of Ablution (Wudu) prepares the body, but the turning of the heart upon the mat cleanses the soul.
  • The Ultimate Coverer: Upon the mat, we cry out to the One who is Al-Ghaffar (The Continuous Forgiver). The sins of yesterday, the mistakes of the past, and the judgments of men are completely dissolved. The mat becomes a place where old burdens are dropped, and a new, pristine garment of light and grace is put on.

III. Consecrated Items: The Overflow of the Mat

The glory experienced upon the mat cannot be contained by the fabric alone. It is a living, breathing energy that infuses itself into the physical world—Oun she ogo lori items (He manifests glory upon the physical objects).

  • The Tangible Shield: When you rise from a place of deep, sincere prayer, the aura of that mat follows you. It attaches itself to your clothing, your hands, your business assets, and your household.
  • The Heavenly Perimeter: Powerful, unseen forces—the angelic guardians dispatched by the Sovereign King—encircle the person who honors the mat. It becomes a wondrous, mysterious reality (Aramada lo yi wonka) that shields the believer from hidden enemies and internal anxiety. Your daily tools and surroundings become blessed simply because you knelt in the presence of the King.

IV. Swift Answers from the Owner of the Throne

The One who is worshipped upon the mat does not slumber, nor does He delay. He is Al-Mujeeb (The Responsive).

  • He does not treat your silent whispers on the mat with negligence (Ko fi oro mi jafara rara).
  • The Timeless Doer: He who answered the prayers of the ancient prophets on their knees is the same One executing your matters swiftly today (kpakpakpa). He took care of yesterday, He is anchoring the peace of today, and He has already designed the triumphs of your tomorrow.

Conclusion: The Decree is Sealed

Beloved, whenever the world overwhelms you, remember the sovereign sanctuary available to you. Unroll your mat. Step away from the chaos. Press your face to the ground and let the Ogo Lori Ite wash over your life.

When you leave your burdens on that sacred mat, know with absolute, unwavering certainty:
To ba jebe—If the King of Glory has decreed your peace upon the mat, then it is settled for eternity.

Amin.
