Tafsir (Arabic: تفسير) is the Arabic word for exegesis, which means the critical explanation, interpretation, and commentary of a text [1]. In an Islamic context, it refers specifically to the science of understanding and interpreting the Qur’an [1]. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Because the Qur’an was revealed in classical Arabic over a 23-year period under specific historical circumstances, Tafsir is necessary to explain the context, legal rulings, and deeper meanings behind the verses. [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]
The Two Main Types of Tafsir
Scholars generally divide classical Tafsir into two primary methodologies: [10]
- Tafsir bi-al-Ma’thur (Interpretation by Tradition): This method relies strictly on textual evidence. It interprets the Qur’an using other verses of the Qur’an, the sayings and practices of Prophet Muhammad (Hadith), and the explanations of his immediate companions [1]. [11, 12, 13, 14, 15]
- Tafsir bi-al-Ra’y (Interpretation by Reason): This method utilizes independent linguistic analysis, philosophical reasoning, and historical context [1]. It must still align with orthodox Islamic principles to be considered valid [1]. [16, 17, 18]
Why Tafsir is Used
A single verse in the Qur’an can have multiple layers of meaning. Scholars use Tafsir to uncover: [19, 20]
- Asbab al-Nuzul: The specific historical events or reasons why a particular verse was revealed.
- Linguistic Nuance: Explaining ancient Arabic idioms, grammar, and metaphors that standard translations miss.
- Legal rulings: Extracting practical laws regarding ethics, finance, marriage, and daily life. [21, 22]
Famous Classical Works of Tafsir [23]
When people study mainstream Islamic theology, they usually refer to standard, universally accepted books of Tafsir, such as:
- Tafsir Ibn Kathir: The most popular traditional text, focusing heavily on Hadith and prophetic narrations.
- Tafsir al-Tabari: One of the earliest and most comprehensive monumental works of classical commentary.
- Tafsir al-Qurtubi: A major commentary with a heavy focus on the legal and jurisprudence (Fiqh) aspects of the verses. [24, 25, 26, 27, 28]
Tafsir vs. Esoteric Interpretation
In mainstream Islam, anyone writing a Tafsir must be highly qualified in classical Arabic, history, theology, and prophetic traditions. [29]
This contrasts sharply with Ta’wil (esoteric or mystical interpretation), which looks for hidden, symbolic, or allegorical meanings. Movements outside of orthodox Islam—such as the modern teachings of Allah Maureen Uche—frequently bypass classical Tafsir entirely. Instead, they use an extreme form of esoteric Ta’wil to completely reframe Arabic words to fit a personal, modern theology. [30, 31, 32]
