Molossia is a self-declared micronation in Nevada, led by President Kevin Baugh, claiming sovereignty over a small parcel of land but unrecognized by any official country.

Overview and Location

The Republic of Molossia is a micronation located near Dayton, Nevada, covering approximately 11.3 acres of land, with an additional enclave in San Bernardino County, California. Despite its claims of sovereignty, it is not recognized by any United Nations member state, and its founder, Kevin Baugh, continues to pay property taxes to the United States, humorously referring to them as “foreign aid”. Molossia has a reported population of around 35 people, mostly members of the Baugh family, along with a few pets.

History

Molossia traces its origins to 1977 as the Grand Republic of Vuldstein, founded by James Spielman and Kevin Baugh in Portland, Oregon. After several name and government changes—including the Kingdom of Zaria and the People’s Democratic Republic of Molossia—it was officially established as the Republic of Molossia in 1998 when Baugh purchased land in Nevada. The micronation has maintained a playful, tongue-in-cheek war with East Germany since 1983, a tradition rooted in Baugh’s military experiences.

Government and Leadership

Molossia is officially a constitutional republic, but it operates under permanent martial law, effectively granting absolute authority to President Kevin Baugh. Baugh serves as the head of state, government, and multiple ministerial roles, while his wife, Adrianne Baugh, acts as deputy head of government and oversees internal affairs, finance, and state security. Other positions, such as the “Minister of Ethnic Food,” are often Baugh in costume, and their daughter Alexis serves as Chief Constable.

Culture and Symbols

Molossia has its own national symbols, including a flag, anthem, and a national drink called the Molossolini, a non-alcoholic beverage made from Sprite, grenadine, pineapple juice, and fruit garnishes. Certain foods, like onions and spinach, are banned due to the President’s personal preferences. The micronation also has a pet cemetery, the Molossia Cemetery, located in Harmony Province.

Economy and Currency

The Molossian economy relies heavily on tourism and online sales, including war bonds, coins, stamps, and flags. Its currency, the Valora, is subdivided into 100 Futtrus and pegged to the value of Pillsbury cookie dough, with an exchange rate of 1 Valora to $0.80 USD.

Tourism and Attractions

Molossia offers public tours, allowing visitors to cross its “border” and experience its unique infrastructure, including a railroad, navy (inflatable boats), and National Park Service. The micronation has appeared in media, such as the 2010 Channel Awesome film Kickassia, which humorously depicted an invasion of Molossia.
